The Lloyd Williams-owned Almandin (Monsun-Anatola, by Tiger Hill) returned to his brilliant best when outstaying his rivals in the $500,000 Gr1 BMW Stakes (2400m) at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday. The 2016 Melbourne Cup winner proved too strong for his rivals in the time-honoured weight-for-age feature, defeating Japanese import Ambitious & Who Shot Thebarman by 1.3 lengths. The 8YO German-bred gelding is now the $3.50 TAB favourite for the $2 million Gr1 Sydney Cup (3200m) at Royal Randwick on 14 April. "It's pleasing to get back on him. He was in great shape today and it's good to see him bounce back at the top level," said Kerrin McEvoy, who was reunited with Almandin for the first time since guiding him to his Melbourne Cup success. "He travelled a bit more forward than I thought we might be but he travelled really well and he was strong at the end of the 2400 metres today." Almandin advanced his record to 7 wins (including the Gr1 Melbourne Cup, Gr2 Grosser Preis der Badischen Unternehmer, Gr3 Bart Cummings Handicap & Listed Japan Racing Association Trophy) and 7 placings from 20 starts for $5,301,091 in earnings.
