At Morphettville racecourse in Adelaide, French 2000 Guineas & French Derby-winning shuttler Lope De Vega (Shamardal-Lady Vettori, by Vettori) celebrated an elite race success when 5YO Australian-bred gelding Santa Ana Lane (Lope De Vega-Fast Fleet, by Fastnet Rock) burst through a gap at the 100m to sprint clear for an eye-catching win in the $1 million Gr1 Darley Goodwood (1200m) for 3YO+, defeating Missrock & I'll Have A Bit. The talented Santa Ana Lane had put the writing on the wall when flashing home for third in the RN Irwin Stakes at his previous outing. "It was a super run the other day and he's always shown us he's got Group One ability," trainer Anthony Freedman's racing manager Brad Taylor said. "We came here today super confident. He was always going to get back and need that luck which luckily he got." Connections are now hoping to book a flight to Brisbane for the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1350m) at Doomben on 9 June. Purchased for $80,000 by Flemington Bloodstock at the 2014 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale, Santa Ana Lane improved his record to 6 wins (including the Gr1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes & Gr3 Zeditave Stakes) and 6 placings (including the Gr3 MRC Heath Stakes) from 26 starts for $1,280,820 in earnings.
