At Moonee Valley in Melbourne, Yarraman Park's Gr3-winning stallion I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit-Cannarelle, by Canny Lad) celebrated a Gr1 triumph when 5YO entire Hellbent (I Am Invincible-Volkaspray, by Volksraad) scored by 0.5-length for trainer Darren Weir in the $500,000 Weight For Age Gr1 William Reid Stakes (1200m) for 3YOs+, defeating 4YO horse Thronum & 3YO filly Catchy. A $95,000 yearling consigned by Dartbrook Downs Thoroughbreds at the 2014 Inglis Classic Sale, Hellbent is part-owned by members of the Mitchell family and Yaramman Park Stud which stands his boom sire. Spruiked by trainer Darren Weir as a prospective elite level sprinter last August, Hellbent has put himself in the box seat to be a possible heir-apparent to his sire. The Gr1 victory, surprisingly his maiden stakes-win, follows several Group and Listed race placings for Hellbent, and took Weir's Gr1 haul for the current season to six. "He's always had the ability, but things just haven't worked out for him," reflected Weir of Hellbent whose record now stands at 7 wins & 7 placings (including the Gr1 Oakleigh Plate, last year's Gr1 William Reid Stakes where he just missed out behind Silent Sedition & the Gr3 Hallmark Stakes) from 23 starts for $901,450 earnings.
