At Randwick's bumper feature day in Sydney, Coolmore's former Gr1-winning Champion Australian Sire Fastnet Rock (Danehill-Piccadilly Circus, by Royal Academy) celebrated an elite race success when blue-blooded 3YO filly Shoals (Fastnet Rock-The Broken Shore, by Hussonet) showed gritty determination to win by a half-length for trainer Anthony Freedman in the $500,000 Surround Stakes (1400m) for 3YO fillies, defeating Torvill & dead-heaters Rimraam and Shumook. Astonishingly, albeit she had failed as a short-priced favourite at her race return in Melbourne's Gr3 Kevin Hayes Stakes, impeccably performed Shoals was allowed to go off at around $14, a price she swiftly made a mockery of. Owned by Arrowfield Pastoral and Pinecliff Racing, the superb effort by Shoals provides her with the exceptional record of 6 wins (including the Gr1 Myer Classic, Gr2 ATC Percy Sykes Stakes, Gr3 TBV Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes & Listed Atlantic Jewel Stakes) & 2 placings (including the Gr1 Thousand Guineas) from 9 starts for $1,362,150 earnings. Bred by John Messara's Arrowfield Stud, who race her in partnership with Jonathan Munz's Pinecliff Racing, Shoals is by Fastnet Rock out of the valuable mare The Broken Shore (Hussonet), a daughter of outstanding producer Shantha's Choice. A $1.9 million purchase by Munz at the 2014 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale from the Teeley Assets Dispersal, The Broken Shore is a half-sister to Arrowfield's multiple champion Australian sire Redoute's Choice, Gr1 winners Platinum Scissors & Manhattan Rain, Gr3 winner Sliding Cube and stakes-winner Echoes of Heaven. According to dailytelegraph.com.au, John Messara revealed, "I'd love to take her to Royal Ascot for a race like the Diamond Jubilee Stakes. She loves soft ground and has already proven herself at Group 1 level against older horses. We could even look at the July Cup at Newmarket, too."
