At Ellerslie in Auckland yesterday, Newgate Farm's successful Gr1-winning shuttle stallion Foxwedge (Fastnet Rock-Forest Native, by Forest Wildcat) sired his second Gr1 winner when the Graham Richardson & Gavin Parker-trained 4YO mare Volpe Veloce (Foxwedge-Bardego, by Barthea) rattled home for a convincing 1.5-lengths win in the $200,000 Gr1 Railway Stakes (1200m) from 7YO gelding Packing Eagle (Pins-Splashing Out, by O'Reilly) & 5YO mare Volks Lightning (Volksraad-Next Century, by Stravinsky). Given a peach of a ride by Jake Bayliss, track specialist Volpe Veloce has had the Railway Stakes as her target for some time, and the versatile mare proved more than up to the task. A $240,000 yearling consigned by Lyndhust Farm at the 2015 NZB National Yearling Sales Series after being pin-hooked for $120,000 as a weanling at the 2104 Magic Millions National Sale, Volpe Veloce is as consistent as they come. The versatile sprinter-miler's record now stands at 10 wins (including the Gr2 Sir Tristram Fillies Classic, Gr3 Eulogy Stakes & Listed Castletown Stakes) from 13 starts for $464,000 earnings. Volpe Veloce is a half-sister to Listed Black Opal Stakes winner Delago Bolt from the Gr3 Blue Diamond Preview winning filly Bardego. Her Helmet half-sister will be offered by Rushton Park at next week's Magic Millions Gold Coast Sale.
