At Doomben racecourse in Brisbane, French 2000 Guineas & French Derby-winning shuttler Lope De Vega (Shamardal-Lady Vettori, by Vettori) celebrated an elite race success when 5YO Australian-bred gelding Santa Ana Lane (Lope De Vega-Fast Fleet, by Fastnet Rock) unwound an impressive turn of foot to draw clear for a comfortable victory in Queensland's winter carnival showpiece - the $1.5 million Gr1 Stradbroke Handicap (1350m) for 3YO+, defeating Super Cash & Champagne Cuddles. This was an historic win for Santa Ana Lane who became the first horse to claim the Gr1 Goodwood & Gr1 Stradbroke double. Trainer Anthony Freedman said he would now like to target Santa Ana Lane at the $13 The Everest (1200m) at Royal Randwick in October. "The tactics were to be a bit closer today than in the Goodwood," Freedman told Racing Queensland Webnews. "They don't have the comfort to be several horses back at Doomben and it all opened up for him. He will have a short spell up here and then we will look at the spring." Freedman added: "Where there [The Everest] if someone wants to talk to us." Purchased for $80,000 by Flemington Bloodstock at the 2014 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale, Santa Ana Lane improved his record to 7 wins (including the Gr1 Darley Goodwood, Gr1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes & Gr3 Zeditave Stakes) and 6 placings (including the Gr3 MRC Heath Stakes) from 27 starts for $2,228,711 in earnings.
