At Doomben racecourse in Brisbane, Darley's former Champion Australian Sire & 11-time Gr1-winning World Champion Miler Lonhro (Octagonal-Shadea, by Straight Strike) celebrated an elite race success when 4YO Australian-bred entire Impending (Lonhro-Mnemosyne, by Encosta De Lago) unleashed his trademark turn of foot to score a brilliant win in the $700,000 weight-for-age Gr1 Kingsford-Smith Cup (1350m), defeating Le Romain & Champagne Cuddles. The beautifully bred Impending is out of Gr1 Thousand Guineas & Gr1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes winner Mnemosyne and is a half-brother to Gr3 Newcastle Cameron Handicap winner Forget (Exceed And Excel). The Gr1-winning Darley home-bred improved his record to 5 wins (including the Gr1 Stradbroke Handicap, Gr2 Victory Stakes & Gr2 Stan Fox Stakes) and 8 placings (including the Gr1 Doomben 10,000, Gr1 Darley Classic, Gr1 Golden Rose Stakes, Gr2 Stan Fox Stakes & Gr2 Arrowfield 3YO Sprint) from 17 starts for $2,403,989 in earnings. Impending, who was also fourth in both the Gr1 Caulfield Guineas and Gr1 Canterbury Stakes, will stand for $22,000 at Darley's Northwood Park on debut in 2018. Before that though, Godolphin will give Impending the chance to go back-to-back in the $1.5 million Gr1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) at Doomben on 9 June. "I was very confident during the week because he had worked so well on Tuesday," trainer James Cummings told Sky Racing. "Today suited him because it was weight-for-age but we will definitely look at the Stradbroke. He is going to stud in the spring and it would be the ideal way for him to go out."
