  • Newcastle Gold Cup Quest For Great House

    Friday, 17th September 2021

After his stunning, Australian maiden victory back in January, many were touting the Chris Waller-trained Great House (Galileo-Anja, by Indian Ridge) as the next big thing, but to date his lone win since that occasion has seen punters and connections clearly frustrated with his efforts. While he hasn't performed badly as such, his efforts at his last two starts would have many wondering if the step up in class to Friday's Gr3 Newcastle Gold Cup (2300m) is within his grasp. Likely to be on a path towards the Gr1 Metropolitan (2400m), a race the owners Highclere Thoroughbreds Australia have had success in, in the past, with the Chris Waller-trained Opinion (Oasis Dream) winning in 2014, Great House needs to show the ability connections know he has if to prove competitive in Friday's race. Dropping considerably in weight from his most recent two starts, but rising in class, Great House has the services of Jeff Penza who should be able to ensure the 5YO gets a cosy run from barrier three where he should be able produce him with the turn of foot that has been previously witnessed. Settling in last position last time out, more than 15 lengths from the leader, Great House maintained that position throughout before making his run once the field entered the Kembla Grange straight, charging home down the outside to be beaten just over three lengths carrying 59kgs. While he is double figure odds, if he's to be a serious contender in the future Spring staying contests where he is holds nominations to the Metropolitan, Caulfield Cup and Melbourne Cup, one would expect to see a positive showing.
