  • New Jockey for Aegon in Makybe Diva

    Wednesday, 8th September 2021

Jockey Luke Currie will replace Jye McNeil aboard Aegon (Sacred Falls-Toss Up, by Zabeel) for this Saturday's Gr1 Makybe Diva Stakes, reported racingnews.co.nz. Currie rode Aegon in trackwork on Tuesday morning, and said, "He is not much to look at, I wouldn't say he is an overly big or strong horse, but he galloped really nice on the course proper this morning. He was really professional and it was a good, solid gallop. He has done quite well since he has been here. They said he isn't a great doer in New Zealand but he has been eating up well since he has been in Melbourne." Trained by Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman, Aegon ran fourth in the Gr1 Memsie at his last start. "He looks like he has got a great turn of foot and in these sort of races they need to be adaptable and do that, because they are hard to win. He looks like a nice ride for Saturday," Currie said. The 4YO gelding won his first five races in succession, including the Gr1 New Zealand Two Thousand Guineas and the Gr2 Hobartville Stakes. His career record is five wins from eight starts and earnings over $1 million. He was sold by Waikato Stud for NZ$150,000 at the 2019 New Zealand Bloodstock National Yearling Sale.
