  • No More Credit Wagering in Ireland

    Tuesday, 31st August 2021

A couple of big developments off the track in Ireland will see both credit card betting and advertising banned during live sporting events, reports racingpost.com. With bookmakers on board for the nationwide ban on credit betting, both online and in betting outlets, bookmakers also rallied behind a "whistle-to-whistle advertising ban for live sport in Ireland." This was off the back of the announcement by Irish president Michael D Higgins that gambling advertising had become a "scourge" which led to addictions and serious fallout for families and individuals. The ban on credit card wagering is outlined under the "Code of Practice for safer gambling" and drew this response from IBA chairperson Sharon Byrne, "We recognise that there is a need for the industry to continue to develop the highest of standards for safer gambling. We believe in particular that the credit card ban and the 'whistle-to-whistle' advertising restrictions are significant steps on that path."
