  • Group 1 Performers an Elite Club

    Monday, 19th July 2021

A report derived from analyses of just Group 1 races in the Australian 2020-21 racing season has thrown up a cross-section of illuminating information. Adding weight to the notion that many feel called but few are chosen is the stark reality that out of a population of almost 28,000 horses to race this season (from 170,300 collective starts to date), just 146 individual thoroughbreds, or 0.5 percent, either won or placed in a Group 1 race. Amongst that elite collective, there is one horse that stands head and shoulders above her contemporaries, and that is Verry Elleegant, the daughter of Zed (Zabeel) whose five individual Group 1 wins form the basis of her 76 Group 1 points. What's interesting is just how bunched the field is one rung beneath her. Fighting out the minor placings for the Black Type Group 1 Premiership, a full 29 points below Verry Elleegant are Arcadia Queen (Pierro) on 47, Montefillia (Kermadec) on 46 and Russian Camelot (Camelot) on 45. They are followed by 12 individual performers separated by just 3 points ranging between 34 and 37.
