  • Peter Hall Appointed RWWA Jockey Coach

    Thursday, 8th July 2021

Dual Group 1 jockey Peter Hall is set to retire mid-August after securing the new role of jockey coach. Fittingly, his final ride will be in the Broome Cup, a race he has won 7 times across his storied career. 54-year-old Hall will replace Jeremy Hustwitt who retires after 17 years helming the RWWA apprentice jockey school. Hall acknowledged that the opportunity to work alongside fellow RWWA jockey coach John Claite, coupled with his segue into a career post race riding seemed a perfect fit. “After I won my second Darwin Cup in a row on Ihtsahymn last year, I had a long time in isolation and I kind of felt like my time was coming to an end. Then when I led out the Perth Cup field on Ihtsahymn and I wasn’t riding in the race, it felt like a bit of a swansong." Hall added, “I always wanted my last day riding to be in the Perth Cup or Broome Cup." As to his new role at the RWWA jockey school, Hall enthused, “I’m pretty overwhelmed to get this job. As I said to my wife, my two kids have left home but now I’ve got 30 kids. I want to help kids enjoy their lives as jockeys. Racing has given me a great life and it’s been so good to me, now I feel like it’s time to pay it back.” Hall's career has been a true Rocky story, rising from humble beginnings in 1983 when he gained his permit to capturing almost every major cup in WA and in excess of 1,000 winners. Below is his dramatic Perth Cup win aboard Delicacy.
