  • Waller Poised to Set Imposing BTP Benchmark

    Wednesday, 30th June 2021

As the 2020-21 racing season draws to a close – there is only a month left – there is speculation that Hall of Fame trainer Chris Waller could one day challenge the odds-defying achievement of Tommy Smith’s 33 consecutive Sydney Training Premierships (1952 to 1985). About to make it 11 straight, Waller is 33 percent on the way to matching Smith and racing is nothing if not certain. Meanwhile, what is a given is that Waller is poised to break the 1,000-point barrier for the 2020-21 Black Type Trainers Premiership. In the inaugural season of the Black Type Premiership, the kiwi expat is currently on 998 points and seems certain to raise the bar incredibly high for any future trainer's points accumulation in a season. Waller’s gargantuan points haul, no doubt underpinned by Verry Elleegant’s 83 points that includes five Group 1 wins, has come from first three placings earned in 100 individual black type races this season.
