  • Small Fish Proving Sweet for Amish Boy

    Tuesday, 9th March 2021

A cursory glance at the Top 10 Australian Black Type Premiership 3YOs is a veritable facsimile of the recently published item on the Top 10 of the 2YO division; ergo; there is not one sire that is represented more than once in the leading 10 runners. The obvious depth of the competition is a healthy sign for the industry. Of particular interest in the hard-fought 3YO division is last week's biggest climber. The colt Amish Boy (Star Witness-Sheeznodoubt, by Not A Single Doubt) rose 12 places in the rankings to share joint sixth spot with Brazen Beau colt North Pacific. What stands him out from the other top tier 3YOs is that he remains a non-winner in his Classic year, something he's made up for by racing in stakes company five times but proving ultra-consistent in the process. Before Saturday, in 2020-21, Amish Boy (sixth in the Gr1 Caulfield Guineas) had finished runner-up in two Group 2s, a Group 3 and a Restricted Listed (the $2 million Gold Coast MM 3YO Guineas). Then came Saturday's Gr1 Newmarket Handicap where the disrespected $101 chance from the Ciaron Maher and David Eustace stable ran out of his skin to finish third. Picking up another 10 Black Type Points he's proved that despite remaining winless for 12 months, in the race for the Black Type Premierships brilliance alone isn't enough; longevity and consistency are equally crucial to a horse's chances. Also placed in the Magic Millions 2YO Clockwise Classic, Amish Boy's sole win came in the Magic Millions Adelaide 2YO Classic exactly a year ago to the day.
