One of the beauties of horse racing is its unpredictable nature. Every season breeders go on a quest to find the next successful stallion, and price is often no indicator of outcome. Horses like Spirit of Boom, Better than Ready, and of course, Written Tycoon, all started their stud career at low fees and have exceeded initial expectations.
Relocated to Riverbank in 2019, Bon Aurum fits the bill for a horse with every chance of doing the same thing. A 2YO winner who was a tough racehorse and won a Gr1 sprint – Bon Aurum has the race record to rise above. His first foals are due in the spring of 2019, meaning that breeders who use him this season will benefit when those foals become 2YOs.
Winner over 1200m as a juvenile, Bon Aurum improved as a 3YO winning twice at stakes level, including the Gr3 Caulfield Guineas Prelude. Trainer Ciaron Maher called Bon Aurum, “a tough horse, an exceptional athlete and a beautiful type.” He certainly proved his worth on the track as a 4YO when he won the Gr1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes beating Gr1 winner Voodoo Lad. Bon Aurum also won a Listed race that season, taking his career total to five wins from sixteen starts.
Bon Aurum’s sire Bon Hoffa won the same Gr1 race as him, the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes and has built a solid record at stud since retiring with Bon Aurum his best runner to date. His group winner Bons Away is inbred to Bon Hoffa’s sire Belong to Me, giving breeders a potential clue that more Danzig, or even Danehill, might work well with Bon Aurum. Bon Aurum is out of a winning mare who descends from the imported family of group winners Young Runaway, Battement de Coeur, Tatvan Incisi, and Wolverton.
Described by his owner-bredder Ken King as a better racehorse than his sire, Bon Aurum’s race record makes him a very worthy punt at only $5,500.
