Power Of The Finishing Post

A wise man once said, “The measure of the Thoroughbred is the winning post.” Tesio’s famous statement applies most aptly to the Magic Millions Gold Coast Sale where buyers continue to spend up on yearlings with the promise of winning races, writes Renée Geelen.

And with graduates like 4-times Gr1 Cox Plate heroine Winx ($23 million in earnings) and dual Everest winner Redzel ($15 million) flying the Magic Millions flag, is it any wonder the 2019 Gold Coast Sale is a must attend event for anyone in the global racing arena?

The Gold Coast Sale continues to grow, thanks to a whole host of graduates starting with Snippets from their very first sale through to the aforementioned stars of today. Every year, breeders bring their precocious types to this sale and buyers are rewarded. In 2019, breeders have pledged record support for this sale with a mammoth catalogue of 1,157 lots, including a record 888 in Book 1. Bowditch said, “The depth and quality of this catalogue will present buyers with a selection of Australasia’s best yearlings like no other sale.”

Across the sale, over one hundred different stallions are represented, including 19 freshman sires and the very best proven sires such as Champion Sire Snitzel (46 lots), this season’s leading sire of stakes-winners I Am Invincible (61), sire of sires Redoute’s Choice (21), Exceed and Excel (19), Fastnet Rock (20), Hinchinbrook (26), More Than Ready (29), Nicconi (22), Not A Single Doubt (30), Sebring (42), Smart Missile (20), Star Witness (26), and Written Tycoon (53). Young up and coming sires like All Too Hard (29), Pierro (32), So You Think (21), Spirit of Boom (17), Wandjina (20), and Zoustar (51), as well as popular first and second season sires such as Brazen Beau (16 lots), Deep Field (41), Dissident (26), Exosphere (24), Headwater (17), Press statement (15), Pride of Dubai (35), Real Impact (19), Rubick (16), Super One (16), and Vancouver (35). Other stallions of note include international stars Deep Impact (1), Frankel (3), Invincible Spirit (1), Savabeel (7), and Tapit (4).

Buyers have many wonderful pedigrees to select from, including the progeny of 33 Gr1 winners, 31 Gr2 winners, and half or full siblings to 27 Gr1 winners such as Estijaab (Lot 63), Invest (Lot 254), Jameka (Lot 801), Mustaaqeem and Rafeef (Lot 850), Sunlight (Lot 152), Viddora (147), and Yankee Rose (Lot 470).
