PRESS STATEMENT (AUS)(Hinchinbrook-Kaaptive Empress, by Kaaptive Edition)
Vinery Stud, NSW. Fee: $16,500

Press Statement Overview

Vinery Stud's Champion NSW 3yo Colt, Press Statement was the only colt of his generation to win at Group 1 level as a 2yo and 3yo. Famed for his talent over a mile, he is only the 4th horse in history to win the Gr.1 mile double of the J.J Atkins S. and the Caulfield Guineas, putting him in company with the greats Mahogany and Luskin Star.

Press Statement remained undefeated throughout his two-year-old season starting with wins at Canterbury and Rosehill before travelling north for the Brisbane winter carnival.

Trainer Chris Waller threw him in at the deep end for the Gr.1 JJ Atkins Stakes (1600m) and the colt confirmed his class when an easy winner at Doomben. “He’s very talented,” Waller said. “I trained Zoustar and Brazen Beau who both ran second in this race.

“I believe Press Statement is a better horse than Zoustar and Brazen Beau were at the same stage. He fits the mould as a super-star colt.”

Press Statement returned after a short spell to toy with his rivals in the Gr.1 Caulfield Guineas as a spring three-year-old. "This horse is a star," jockey Hugh Bowman said. "I had to ride him a bit out of his comfort zone but his class came to fruition."

Apart from his race record, where he retired sound with 6 wins from 1000-1600m, Vinery general manager Peter Orton said Press Statement is an outstanding individual. “He’s the first son of Hinchinbrook, who is a half-brother to Snitzel, to go to stud and that is an important element from a new stallion prospect.

"Press Statement was unbeaten at two and the dominant winner of the Caulfield Guineas in the spring, which is acknowledged as a stallion-making race. With his Group 1 record and physique we believe he has all the necessary attributes to succeed at stud. He is right up there as one of the most desirable young stallions in the Hunter Valley.”

Breeders flocked to Press Statement in his first two years and he was well supported with high quality mares. The response to his first weanlings in 2018 was also positive and encouraging.

His first weanling to sell in NZ, at the Karaka May sale was a colt from Bearish who made $85,000. Next his first crop were seen at the Magic Millions National Sale, where Press Statement had two sell for $110,000, a filly from Meridian and a colt from Purcentage. With the good judges; Slade Bloodstock, Aquis Farm, JR Thoroughbreds, Bluegrass Bloodstock, Simon Miller Racing, Mulcaster Bloostock etc. buying weanlings, excitement mounts ahead of his first yearlings selling in 2019.

Press Statement BR News

  • Michael Costa's Golden Ambition

    Thu, 18 Jul 2019

Heading into Saturday's Listed Tattersall's Mile at Eagle Farm in an attempt to claim his first back type success at his fiftieth start, connections probably would've thought that Gold Ambition (Savabeel) would already have that black type in his pedigree after his earlier efforts which included a third, beaten a length and a half behind Le Romain (Hard Spun) in the Gr1 Randwick Guineas, with Press Statement (Hinchinbrook) in second, while a length behind Gold Ambition back in fifth was World Champion Miler and back-to-back Hong Kong Horse of the Year Beauty Generation (Savabeel). Originally trained by Bjorn Baker at Warwick Farm, the $260,000 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale graduate from the draft of Rosemont Stud has been racing under the care of Gold Coast-based trainer Michael Costa for his last 15 starts, where the now 6YO has recorded seven top three finishes highlighted by a last start win at Doomben over the distance of Saturday's race, a trip his trainer feels is his optimum. "We have tried him at a bit of distance but really around 1600m looks his best. He should be suited on Saturday," stated Costa.

  • $1 million Magic Millions Yearling Debuts

    Wed, 3 Jul 2019

Fastnet Rock's blue-blooded 2YO son Duty, trained by John O'Shea, will head to the races for the first time this Wednesday, contesting the  Press Statement @ Vinery Maiden (1200m) off the back of five barrier trial efforts. Duty finished second in his most recent trial behind Excellent Proposal (Exceed And Excel), with that colt making a winning debut last week. Purchased from the draft of Element Hill at the 2018 Magic Millions Yearling Sale for $1 million by Tom Magnier and John O'Shea, Duty is out of the Listed Juanmo Stakes-winning Encosta de Lago mare Risk Aversion, a three-quarter-sister to the dam of Snitzel's Gr1-winning 2YO Summer Passage, as well as being a half-sister to Shania Dane (Danehill)  and the multiple stakes-winning Hong Kong Sprinter Scintillation (Danehill). Raced by Coolmore, Hutchins Thoroughbreds, Jadeskye, Go Bloodstock Australia, Saric Racing, Finemore Thoroughbreds, Sedgewyn and Dr R A Aboud, Duty will join fellow Coolmore raced Fastnet Rock colt Memphis Blue on Wednesday, a Gr3-placed full relation to stakes winners Ennis Hill and Lake Geneva. In what appears on paper to be a high quality raced loaded with future talent, the race favourite Mandela for Snowden Racing is yet to race, but has won two of his four trials. Another well-bred colt by Fastnet Rock colt to face the judge for the first time is the Chris Waller-trained Lewis, the Strawberry Hill-bred juvenile is out of the Gr1 winner Sunday Joy.

  • Fanreluche Double-Cross For Rising Star Filly

    Tue, 2 Jul 2019

Meanwhile, exciting 3YO filly Baccarat Baby (Casino Prince-Meerlust by Johannesburg), a homebred for Peter Harris and Matthew Irwin, could boost her value more than normal should she win a Gr1 event for connections. The recent Gr3 winner is direct descendant of North American champion Fanfreluche (Northern Dancer) who is also third dam of Casino Prince’s sire Flying Spur, and a premium victory and a double-cross to a blue-hen mare would put Baccarat Baby in the blue-chip department when she eventually retires to stud. Her performance confirms Casino Prince as an unequivocal go-to sire for broodmare owners looking for established value in the Hunter Valley. He stands for a $6,600 service fee at Vinery Stud with More Than Ready ($55,000), All Too Hard ($27,500), Star Turn ($22,000), Headwater ($16,500), Press Statement ($16,500) & Pluck ($6,600).

  • High Quality For MM Broodmare Supplementary

    Mon, 20 May 2019

The catalogue for the star-studded 2019 Magic Millions Gold Coast National Broodmare Sale has been enhanced with a quality-packed supplementary released. Featuring 51 lots, the supplementary catalogue includes 20 race fillies and maiden mares, one stallion, seven stallion nominations and 20 broodmares. Highlights among the newly catalogued lots include Erato, the young dam of this year's Blue Diamond Stakes winner Lyre (covered by Russian Revolution) as well as the dams of Gr1 winner Leicester (Fastnet Rock) and explosive sprinter Invincible Star (I Am Invincible). Among the new race fillies and maiden mares are stakes performers I'll Have a Bit, Ellicazoom, Prom Queen, Everyday Lady, Snogging, Marcellina, Million, Problem Solver, Bubbles'n'troubles, Indrabeel and Plucky Girl. The seven stallion nominations to Capitalist, Dundeel, Encryption, Hellbent, Mendelssohn, Press Statement and Sidestep are being sold with all proceeds to injured jockey Tye Angland. Blue blooded stallion prospect The Taj Mahal is yet another feature of the supplementary for the auction. All of the new lots are now included in the online catalogue and via Equineline for iPad users. To download the PDF catalogue CLICK HERE. The 2019 Gold Coast National Sale commences on Wednesday with Day-1 of the National Weanling Sale commencing at 10am.

  • Vinery Hosting Scone Carnival Stallion Parades

    Thu, 9 May 2019

During the Scone Cup Carnival later this week, Vinery Stud will open its gates and invite breeders to the stud to inspect their line-up of six high class stallions standing in 2019. The parades will coincide with the richest country racing carnival in Australia, held on Friday 10 and Saturday 11 May, to allow Scone’s guests to fill in their mornings and get a great feel for the Thoroughbred industry in the Horse Capital of Australia. It’s a great opportunity to view the stallions and get up nice and close to them for your inspections before the upcoming breeding season. Vinery’s bloodstock expert Adam White will talk you through the sire line-up and explain which types of mares work best with each of them. The main entrance opens at 9am for a light morning tea. The parades will kick off after that. The stallions comprise:

    • All Too Hard – Australian Champion 3YO, winner of over $ 2million on the track and sire of 22 stakes performers from just 4 crops of racing age.
    • Casino Prince – Champion 1st & 2nd Season Sire, winner of over $1 million on the track, prolific sire with a 70% winners to runners strike rate.
    • Headwater – Exciting young stallion with an incredible sprinting pedigree and performance record. First yearlings averaged almost 6 times covering fee at the 2019 Magic Millions.
    • Pluck – By the legendary More Than Ready, he’s the perfect outcross and his average progeny earnings are 6.7 times his current service fee.
    • Press Statement – The NSW Champion 3YO, with 2 Gr1 wins and over $1.8 million in earnings. His first crop sold to $380k and averaged over 6 times covering fee at the Magic Millions.
    • Star Turn – The powerhouse sprinter who was never unplaced as a 3YO including 4 Gr1 runs. His first crop weanlings sell in 2019.

  • Press Statement Filly To Sell In SAf Sale

    Wed, 24 Apr 2019

Bloodstock South Africa's National Yearling Sale commences on Wednesday and within the 565-strong catalogue, there is a lone offering of an Australian-bred filly by Vinery Stud's dual Gr1 winner Press Statement (Hinchinbrook). Upon inspection of the pedigree of the filly who will sell as Lot 362, from the draft of Hemel 'N Aarde Stud, it is immediately apparent why the filly was initially purchased from Australia and sent to South Africa to be on-sold as a yearling. Purchased as a weanling from the Bhima Thoroughbreds draft at the 2018 Magic Millions National Weanling Sale for just $12,000, the Kia Ora Stud-bred filly is a daughter of the unraced Galileo mare Gayika, herself a full-sister to South Africa's Champion, Horse of the Year and multiple Gr1 winner Igugu, who was also bred by Kia Ora Stud before being sold to South Africa connections. A half-brother to the recently deceased Tarka (All Too Hard), successful in the Gr2 Stan Fox Stakes where he became the only ever horse to defeat the now retired five-time Gr1 winner The Autumn Sun, the Press Statement filly is also the family of the dual Gr3-winning, Gr1 placed Honorius (Holy Roman Emperor) and the Listed winner Ngaga (Fastnet Rock).

  • Vinery Young Guns Set Breeding Season Tone

    Wed, 24 Apr 2019

Vinery has announced its 2019 stallion service fees ahead of a breakthrough season for exciting young sires Press Statement and Headwater. The duo’s first yearlings were very popular at the sales, and they will step out in the spring for Australia’s leading stables. A Press Statement filly made $340,000 on the Gold Coast and a colt $270,000 at Sydney Classic that will be trained by Chris Waller. “Press Statement was a genuine Gr1 horse and the feedback from the breakers has been very positive,” Vinery General Manager Peter Orton said this week. “They’re tough and they’re athletes.” Press Statement (Hinchinbrook) was the only colt of his generation to win at Gr1 level as a 2YO and 3YO. Waller rated him a superstar and a better 2YO than Zoustar & Brazen Beau! Headwater began his stud career with a ‘speed on speed’ label and his first crop are in the fast-lane for precocity and good looks. He topped first-crop turnover at the Inglis Classic and among that draft was a $140,000 colt purchased by Mick Price. Headwater has a potent pedigree combining Champion sire Exceed And Excel and Oakleigh Plate Gr1 winner River Dove. He won the Silver Slipper Stakes Gr2 before returning at three to defeat older horses in the Kensington Stakes LR down the straight at Flemington. A season behind is ultra consistent Gr1 sprinter Star Turn (Star Witness) whose first foals are catalogued for the Inglis Australian Weanling Sale and Magic Millions National Sale in May and the Vinery team have been fielding rave reports from around the country. “Breeders are coming back after seeing his foals,” Orton said. “He’s stamping them, alright. They’re beasts. He’s a great outcross with just one strain of Danehill back four generations. He’s been booked out in his first two years here and his fee remains the same in 2019.” The Vinery roster and fees are:

    • All Too Hard - $27,500
    • Star Turn - $22,000
    • Headwater - $16,500
    • Press Statement - $16,500
    • Casino Prince - $6,600
    • Pluck - $6,600
  • High Benchmark For Antonio Padre

    Tue, 16 Apr 2019

Trainer Chris Waller has trained two foals of Kaaptive Empress to victory in the Gr1 JJ Atkins Stakes in the shape of Press Statement (Hinchinbrook) and Pressday (Domesday), and this Wednesday another foal of the mare, Antonio Padre, will commence a campaign that may see the juvenile colt head towards the Brisbane winter carnival in an attempt to emulate his relations. Like his full-brother, the Vinery Stud-based Press Statement, the Waller-trained Antonio Padre is by the ill-fated Hinchinbrook and will contest the Justify @ Coolmore Handicap (1300m) at his first run back. Eighth on debut in January when starting the second favourite, the form of the race looks promising with the surprise winner that day being Dundeel's exciting Gr1 colt Castelvecchio who heads into Saturday's Gr1 Champagne Stakes (1600m) with a live chance, while second was the China Horse Club-raced Just Zerene (Zoustar) who travelled to New Zealand for her most recent start, finishing fifth in Gr1 company. While Antonio Padre has a long way to go to live up to the race day performances of his brothers, it's worth noting that although Pressday had won by this time in his campaign, Press Statement hadn't yet made his race debut, before going on to win his first three starts as a juvenile. One of two runners in the field for Waller, Antonio Padre will start from barrier two for jockey Tommy Berry.

  • Eckstein Wins Gr3 Southern Cross Stakes

    Mon, 18 Feb 2019

    %%20190216_RAN_R5:Southern Cross Stakes%%

At Randwick in Sydney, Yarraman Park's Gr3-winning stallion I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit-Cannarelle, by Canny Lad) added a Listed race success when 5YO Australian-bred mare Eckstein (I Am Invincible-Comrie, by Choisir) scored her inaugural first-up win with a solid 0.2-length victory in the $157,800 Gr3 Southern Cross Stakes (1200m). Completing a brilliant couple of days for trainer Kurt Goldman who parlayed a $50,000 Inglis cheque into a Press Statement yearling (at Inglis Classic) after winning  last Wednesday’s Highway Handicap with Safe Landing, Eckstein was one of a wall of horses that looked capable of winning at the 200m mark. She finished best to beat long-time leader, 8YO gelding Dothraki, and odds-on, hitherto undefeated 3YO colt Brutal. The latter was pratted three deep for much of the run, so it was pleasing to see him rally when placed under pressure from all sides, and he shouldn’t be sacked on that performance. Finishing just out of the placings in the Gr2 Matriarch Stakes at Flemington in November, Eckstein’s return to the winner’s enclosure boosted her record to 7 wins (including the Gr3 Glenlogan Park Stakes, Listed Paris Lane Stakes & Listed Mode Plate) and 5 placings (including the Gr1 Myer Classic, Gr3 Nivison Stakes & Magic Millions 3YO Guineas) from 29 starts for $1,048,535 in earnings.

  • Inaugural Highway Sale Averages $25,264

    Fri, 15 Feb 2019

Thursday’s inaugural Highway Session ended with a clearance rate of 85%, average of $25,264 and gross of $3,638,000, taking the entire Classic Sale gross to $49,031,250. In addition to Murrulla Stud’s sale-topper, demand was also very strong for a Dundeel x Replacement Miss filly, which sold for $75,000 to Blueblood Thoroughbreds from the draft of Evergreen Stud. The equal-third top lots were a pair of colts in Lot 987 (Press Statement x Sin Sin Sin colt) from Kitchwin Hills and lot 867 (Duporth x Elysian Dancer) from Toolooganvale Farm, who both reached $70,000. The Press Statement colt was purchased by Goulburn trainer Kurt Goldman, who used the $50,000 Inglis Credit Voucher he won on Wednesday when Safe Landing won the Inglis Country Highway at Warwick Farm.

  • Classic Sale Prototypes By Press Statement

    Fri, 1 Feb 2019

Vinery sire Press Statement has 22 yearlings heading to the Inglis Classic Sale next week on the back of a very encouraging start at the Magic Millions. His first crop averaged $170,000 on the Gold Coast and there was more good news for his Classic draft when Vinery-bred filly Exhilarates won the $2 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m) on January 12. Vinery has catalogued a Press Statement–Night War colt (Lot 561) closely-related to Exhilarates. “You only have to check the pedigree to realize it’s a 2YO family,” Vinery Bloodstock Manager Adam White said. “He’s an athletic, thickset colt and looks a forward type.” Night War won a Karrakatta Plate Gr2 and is a half-sister to Blue Diamond Stakes Gr1 winner Samaready whose first-named foal is Exhilarates. She is an $8 second-favourite for the $3.5 million Golden Slipper Stakes Gr1 in March. Meanwhile, Press Statement could have another Classic Sale update when Jericho Missile runs in the $250,000 WA Magic Millions 2YO Classic RL on Saturday week, February 9. His half-brother by the Vinery sire will parade 48 hrs later as Lot 570 at Riverside Stables. Meanwhile, another Press Statement parading at the Classic Sale is the half-brother to brilliant Melbourne 2YO colt Yes Yes Yes who won at Flemington and Moonee Valley in December. He is from Sin Sin Sin (Lot 987) and is being offered by Arlington Park breeder Brett Bradley through Kitchwin Hills. “He’s a nice, big strong colt and will go early,” Bradley said. “He’s the spitting image of Press Statement and there’s plenty of speed on the dam’s side, too.”

  • Star Fillies Could Tackle Males In Caulfield Guineas
