EXOSPHERE (AUS)(Lonhro-Altitude, by Danzero)
Darley, NSW. Fee: $22,000

Exosphere Overview

Richly talented Exosphere made his mark on the racetrack early, winning fresh-up in February of his 2YO season, followed by a fabulous victory in the Gr2 Skyline Stakes over 1200m. With his ability as a leading juvenile now confirmed on the track, the son of Champion Sire Lonhro was aimed at the very best races for the rest of his career.

As a 3YO, Exosphere won his first three races for the season in succession – highlighted by victory in the Gr1 Golden Rose, as well as wins in the Gr2 Run to the Roses and Gr2 Roman Consul Stakes. The boom colt ended his spring with a stunning run for fourth in the Gr1 Coolmore Stud Stakes and came back in the autumn to face the older horses, running fourth in the Gr1 Lightning Stakes to champion sprinter Chautauqua.

“Exosphere was a horse with amazing ability, as demonstrated in the Gr1 Golden Rose… He displays a lot of substance and he has a strong colonial speed pedigree. The Lonhro sireline has really kicked on and Exosphere looks as though he will add significantly to his father’s legacy,” said Darley’s Head of Sales Alastair Pulford.

Champion Sire, and Horse of the Year, Lonhro is one of those rare horses who can do everything, and with 78 stakes-winners (ten Gr1 winners) in his own right, he is now also fashioning a solid reputation as an emerging sire of sires with the likes of Pierro (12 stakes winners) and Denman (12 stakes winners), as well as many young stallions with youngsters about to hit the track. His progeny can sprint (Exosphere, Denman, Bounding, Impending, Kementari etc), run early (Pierro), and be classic horses (VRC Oaks winner Aristia).

Exosphere is out of a four time city winning Danzero mare, Altitude, and is her second foal. Her first foal, Elevates, is also a winner. This pedigree has a strong build-up of sires with Exosphere’s second dam being stakes-placed winner Highest (by Marscay), and his third dam being the stakes winner Consular Belle (dam of stakes winners Vibrant Virgo, and Tell me Straight).

Buyers will get a first look at the Exosphere yearlings at the Magic Millions Gold Coast sale, where he has 23 yearlings on offer. Exosphere also has 17 yearlings entered in the Inglis Classic yearling sale, a further 10 in book one at the New Zealand Bloodstock yearling sale, and nine at the Melbourne Premier Sale. His weanlings, in strong demand, sold for up to $160,000 last year.

  • Exosphere & Chautauqua Level Pegging In Lightning Market

    Fri, 19 Feb 2016

Tomorrow’s Gr1 Black Caviar Lightning (1000m) at Flemington may well be a small field in numbers, however the seven-horse line-up is posing one of the biggest head scratchers for punters in years. Sharing favouritism at $2.60 are freakish sprinter Chautauqua and his equally exciting 3YO rival Exosphere. Both were beaten in their last starts when red hot favourites. The big questions that hang over their respective heads are, will Chautauqua find 1000m too short at this stage of his career, and is Exosphere just not suited to the Flemington straight sprint course. Waiting in the wings should either slip up are Terravista, Delectation (Chautauqua's conqueror in the Gr1 Darley Classic – see below) and Japonisme, each talented enough to give the race a massive shake on any given day. Even Kinglike ($26) could cause a scare at odds.

  • Pride Has Faith In Terravista

    Tue, 16 Feb 2016

Trainer Joe Pride is confident he has stable star Terravista ready to fire in Saturday's Gr1 Black Caviar Lightning Stakes (1000m) at Flemington, reports Racing.com. The 2014 Gr1 Darley Classic winner is one of 15 nominations for the $750,000 sprint feature that will also see the return of high profile gallopers Delectation, Japonisme and Exosphere. "He's right up there with those sort of horses," Pride said. "We just need him to perform at the level he's shown he can in the past and he's given every indication that he'll be able to do that this week." He added: "I'm expecting a small field and with his good turn of foot that should help him." Pride has a three-race autumn campaign planned for Terravista, beginning with the Gr1 Lightning and Gr1 Newmarket Handicap in Melbourne, and concluding with the Gr1 TJ Smith Stakes in Sydney. "It fits into his program a little better in that I want him to peak on TJ Smith Stakes day," Pride said. "There's not really a lot of movement in his program because being a Group 1 horse, there's not many races they can run him." He added: "He's had the one trial, but for 1000 metres I think that's all he'd need. I'm very happy with him."

  • Lightning First-up For Exosphere

    Thu, 19 Nov 2015

Outstanding 3YO colt Exosphere (Lonhro-Altitude, by Danzero) will be prepared for a first-up tilt at the Gr1 Lightning Stakes (1000m) at Flemington on 20 February, reports AAP. Exosphere, who is currently in the spelling paddock, suffered his first defeat of the spring when a surprise fourth in the Gr1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) at Flemington. The Darley homebred had previously stamped himself as a sprinter of the highest order when winning the Gr1 Golden Rose, Gr2 Run To The Rose, and the Gr2 Roman Consul Stakes, in which he ran the 1200m journey in a scintillating time of 1:08.52. Godolphin trainer John O'Shea put Exosphere's Coolmore flop down to track bias and a long campaign and said he would have no hesitation in running him down the famous Flemington straight again. "We're endeavouring to give him an opportunity to run well down there, with the chance of possibly running in the Newmarket [Gr1 at Flemington on 13 March]," O'Shea said. "If not he'll just come home and run in the Canterbury Stakes [Gr1 at Randwick on 5 March]." He added: "We always felt, if anything, he'd be well suited down the straight. We'll get there in February and see what happens with regard to the surface and if it's a fairer surface he might go a little bit better." O'Shea said the son of Lonhro would return to his stable next week to begin preparing for the autumn.

  • Coolmore Stud Stakes Field & Barrier Draw

    Thu, 29 Oct 2015

Star Godolphin colt Exosphere (Lonhro-Altitude, by Danzero) has drawn perfectly in barrier two for Saturday's $500,000 Gr1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) at Flemington. The outstanding son of Lonhro is rated a $1.40 chance to win the stallion-making event and double his Gr1 tally after landing the Golden Rose Stakes last month. The Darley homebred took his record to 5 wins from 7 starts when scoring a breathtaking victory in the Gr2 Roman Consul Stakes at Randwick last start, in which he ran the 1200m journey in a scintillating time of 1:08.52. Exosphere's principal market rivals, the David Hayes & Tom Dabernig-trained Keen Array and stable-mate Mogador, both $11 chances, also fared well drawing barriers five and seven respectively. The final field is:

    1. Exosphere (John O'Shea-James McDonald) 56.5kg (2)

    2. Ready For Victory (Mick Price-Damien Oliver) 56.5kg (4)

    3. Super One (Michael Freedman-Hugh Bowman) 56.5kg (10)

    4. Keen Array (D Hayes & T Dabernig-Damian Lane) 56.5kg (5)

    5. Japonisme (Chris Waller-Glyn Schofield) 56.5kg (3)

    6. Counterattack (Chris Waller-Blake Shinn) 56.5kg (11)

    7. Dal Cielo (Murray Baker-Opie Bosson) 56.5kg (12)

    8. Sebring Sun (Gary Portelli-Brenton Avdulla) 56.5kg (9)

  • O'Shea Happy With Exosphere

    Wed, 28 Oct 2015

Star Sydney colt Exosphere (Lonhro-Altitude, by Danzero) may be a prohibitive $1.40 favourite for Saturday's $500,000 Gr1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) at Flemington, but Godolphin trainer John O'Shea says the outstanding young sprinter will still need things to go his way, reports AAP. "I think it's going to be a very competitive race," O'Shea said of the stallion-making event. "There's genuine speed and last year if you drew inside (barrier) six, well you might as well have stayed at home because of the northerly blowing up the straight and you needed to draw the outside." He added: "If we got a scenario like that on Saturday, well it wouldn't matter what price he was or how good he was, he's going to be vulnerable. So we're just hoping for a nice even run and I think whenever he gets in that scenario he's always competitive. We're happy with him." Exosphere, who, along with Cox Plate heroine Winx, is considered Australia's most exciting racehorse, had his first look at the Flemington track in a jump-out last Friday. "Nothing worries him. He's really happy," O'Shea said. "He had a bit of a squeal this morning [Tuesday] which is about as excited as he gets. His condition is good and he's sound and fit and well." The Darley homebred took his record to 5 wins (including the Gr1 Golden Rose) from 7 starts when scoring a breathtaking victory in the Gr2 Roman Consul Stakes at Randwick last start, in which he ran the 1200m journey in a scintillating time of 1:08.52.

  • Exosphere Wins Gr2 Roman Consul Stakes

    Tue, 6 Oct 2015

At Royal Randwick in Sydney, former Champion Australian Sire & 11-time Gr1-winning Darley World Champion Miler Lonhro (Octagonal-Shadea, by Straight Strike) added a Group success when Godolphin's exciting 3YO colt Exosphere (Lonhro-Altitude, by Danzero) scored a brilliant 3.3-length win for trainer John O'Shea in the $300,000 Gr2 Roman Consul Stakes (1200m) for 3YOs, over fellow 3YO colt Zoutenant (Zizou-Tenant's Tiara, by Beautiful Crown) & 3YO gelding Japonisme (Choisir-Haiku, by Encosta de Lago). This was an explosive performance from Exosphere who stamped himself as one of the best horses in Australia. The Darley homebred took his record to 5 wins (including the Gr1 Golden Rose, Gr2 Run To The Rose & Gr2 ATC Skyline Stakes) from 7 starts for $1,035,350 earnings. "He is a superstar," jockey James McDonald told Sky Racing. "He has an incredible turn-of-foot and the world is his oyster." He added: "He is a colt whose career is limited due to stud duties, but we will enjoy him while we can." Exosphere is now expected to head to Melbourne for the stallion-making Gr1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) at Flemington on 31 October.

  • Exosphere Wins Gr1 Golden Rose Stakes

    Mon, 14 Sep 2015

At Rosehill Gardens in Sydney, former Champion Australian Sire & 11-time Gr1-winning Darley World Champion Miler Lonhro (Octagonal-Shadea, by Straight Strike) celebrated a Gr1 success when Godolphin's exciting 3YO colt Exosphere (Lonhro-Altitude, by Danzero) scored by 2.3-lengths for trainer John O'Shea in the $1 million Gr1 Golden Rose Stakes (1400m) for 3YOs, over 3YO filly Speak Fondly (Northern Meteor-Blab, by Flying Spur) & fellow 3YO colt Sebring Sun (Sebring-Soleil Royale, by French Deputy). This was the first Gr1 victory for Exosphere who stamped himself as arguably Australia's pre-eminent 3YO with this brilliant win. The handsome youngster took his record to 4 wins (including the Gr2 Run To The Rose & Gr2 ATC Skyline Stakes) from 6 starts for $853,350 earnings. Trainer John O'Shea said Exosphere was likely to head to Melbourne for the Gr3 Guineas Prelude (1400m) at Caulfield on 26 September, before contesting the $1 million Gr1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) two weeks later. "It was a nice win. He has great turn of foot and he is hard to run down," O'Shea told Sky Racing. "A horse like Exosphere has international appeal and you never know where he could end up." He added: "We always had in our mind to go to Caulfield for the Prelude and we'll see how he pulls up, get him down to Melbourne and see if he can be effective around a bend down there."

    Mon, 31 Aug 2015

At Rosehill Gardens in Sydney, former Champion Australian Sire & 11-time Gr1-winning Darley World Champion Miler Lonhro (Octagonal-Shadea, by Straight Strike) added a Group success when Godolphin's exciting 3YO colt Exosphere (Lonhro-Altitude, by Danzero) resumed with a brilliant 1.3-length win for trainer John O'Shea in the $175,000 Gr2 Run To The Rose (1200m) for 3YOs, over fellow 3YO colts Press Statement (Hinchinbrook-Kaaptive Empress, by Kaaptive Edition) & Holler (Commands-Shouts, by Strategic). This was an outstanding return to racing by Exosphere who took his record to 3 wins (including the Gr2 ATC Skyline Stakes) from 5 starts for $231,950 earnings. Trainer John O'Shea said that Exosphere would next be seen in the $1 million Gr1 Golden Rose (1400m) at Rosehill Gardens on 12 September. "He was soft late, he didn't have a hard run and he should go forward from that," O'Shea said. "You will see him in the Rose in a fortnight."

    Mon, 2 Mar 2015

At Warwick Farm in Sydney, former Champion Australian Sire & 11-time Gr1-winning Darley World Champion Miler Lonhro (Octagonal-Shadea, by Straight Strike) added a Group success when Godolphin's exciting 2YO colt Exosphere (Lonhro-Altitude, by Danzero) romped home by 4-lengths for trainer John O'Shea in the $175,000 Gr2 Skyline Stakes (1200m) for 2YO c&g, over fellow 2YO colts Odyssey Moon (Snitzel-Run to the Moon, by Arch) & Wolf Cry (Street Cry-Starfish, by Redoute's Choice). This was the first stakes victory for Exosphere who took his record to 2 wins from 3 starts for $124,950 earnings. Exosphere, who firmed dramatically for the Gr1 Golden Slipper (1200m) at Rosehill on 21 March following this brilliant win, will now go straight into the $3.5 million juvenile feature without another run. "He was always a very nice horse early doors. He trialled the same day as Furnaces and they both won by six lengths," O'Shea told TVN. "Furnaces won his debut race and this fellow just didn't have a good day at the races, so he's always been highly thought of by the team. It's good for Sheikh Mohammed to have a couple of nice Lonhro's coming through the grades."
