  • Quality Colt Has Edge In Guineas Prelude

    Thursday, 16th September 2021

Toby and Trent Edmonds' dual stakes-winning juvenile Alpine Edge (Better Than Ready-Freezethemillions, by Freeze) is looking to continue his solid 3YO form when he lines up in Saturday's Gr3 Caulfield Guineas Prelude (1400m) at Caulfield. Travelling from his Gold Coast base, the colt spent a few days in Sydney before continuing with his journey to Melbourne where he is one of 10 final acceptances for the $300,000 race. While the field does look slightly disappointing on paper with none of the Group 1-winning juveniles in the field due to most targeting the Gr1 Golden Rose on Saturday week, a look back through previous winners highlights that future Gr1 winners Alligator Blood (All Too Hard), Epaulette (Commands), Helmet (Exceed And Excel), Wonderful World (Agnes World), Apache Cat (Lion Cavern) and Elvstroem (Danehill) have all won the Prelude. Currently the favourite, Alpine Edge will be partnered by Craig Williams, while second favourite is the $1.1m yearling and last start Gr3 Ming Dynasty runner-up Military Expert (Redoute's Choice-Gresset, by Hussonet), who should also prove very hard to beat. An interesting runner is the Chris Waller-trained Cape Breton (Vancouver-Exclusive Lass, by Nicconi), who will go into the race first up, and based on his juvenile campaign where he won his first two starts, it would be little surprise to see the quality colt step up and highlight his future Spring prospects.
