  • Profondo Ready to Take Baby Steps

    Wednesday, 25th August 2021

Despite being crowned Champion 2YO Sire multiple times in Japan, where he stood until his untimely death in July 2019, Deep Impact (Sunday Silence-Wind in Her Hair, by Arazi) is often perceived as a stallion whose progeny get better as 3YOs and above. Trainer Richard Litt, who is managing the career of $1.9 million Magic Millions sale-topper Profondo (Deep Impact-Honesty Prevails, by Redoute’s Choice) for the Galletta family, has elected to take a patient path with the prized Arrowfield Stud-consigned colt who is now three. According to racing.com, Litt has purposefully held Profondo back with the intention that he’ll stay in work for a while during his first campaign. Litt has already experienced the pressure of training a high-profile colt, training Castelvecchio (Dundeel) – also owned by the Gallettas – to Group 1 wins as a 2 and 3YO. Consequently, he wants to see Profondo start as a ripple and end as a wave, so while the son of Deep Impact holds noms for some of the big 3YO spring races, Litt remains pragmatic and grounded ahead of an early September 1400m debut run for the recent dual trial-winner. "We will just get that run over and done with and come up with a plan where we are at from there… Those [feature] races are obviously our goals, but he has to produce before we can even look at those races," Litt acknowledged. “He's very exciting, he is one of the nicest horses that you could ever want to train.”
