  • Seven in Succession for Corner Pocket

    Monday, 23rd August 2021

Winning one race can be hard enough. Seven is a special type of thrill and 5YO gelding Corner Pocket (Toronado-Baize, by Commands) made it seven wins in succession this weekend at Moonee Valley, reports racing.com. "How could you not get excited about a horse winning seven in a row?" jockey Declan Bates said. "He’s an absolute pleasure to ride and he keeps delivering. He never goes out and blows the field away but I thought the last 50 (metres) he just clocked off. I think he was more waiting on them than anything so honestly I don’t know how far he will go but I will just enjoy it at the moment." The $3 favourite lead all the way, and now has a record of seven wins and two placings from nine starts with earnings over $250,000. Initially sold as a weanling by Swettenham Stud for $75,000, Corner Pocket was on-sold at the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale by Musk Creek Farm for $175,000. He is the third foal, and first winner, for winning mare Baize, whose dam is a half-sister to Gr3 winner Demerit (Lonhro-Shame, by Scenic). Demerit stood at Rangeview Stud in WA for a few seasons, unfortunately dying in 2019, and has left four stakes winners.
