  • Multiple Champion Sire Silvano Dies

    Friday, 20th August 2021

Retiring from stud duties last season, Maine Chance Farms' Silvano (Lomitas), a Champion Sire in both South Africa and Slovenia, passed away late Tuesday night, after a severe bout of colic. Represented by over 100 stakes-winners, Germany's Horse Of The Year in 2001 was a sensational racehorse, recording seven victories, racing in six different countries, winning elite level races in America, Hong Kong and Singapore. He also finished fourth in the 2001 Gr1 WS Cox Plate behind Northerly, Sunlight and Viscount. Standing initially in Germany, he shuttled to South Africa, and as luck might have it, an outbreak of African Horse Sickness saw him remain in South Africa where he progressed to be Champion Sire on five occasions, highlighted by siring 25 individual Group 1 winners including four who recorded success in South Africa's biggest race, the Gr1 Durban July. Silvano's legacy will continue with his sons at stud including the exciting Vercingetorix, who stood alongside his sire, while the former Mike de Kock trained Hawwaam, a five-time Gr1 winner will stand his first season this year at Wilgerbosdrift Stud.
