  • Stewards' Spring Decision All But a Fait Accompli

    Monday, 16th August 2021

To the naked eye, it appeared a fait accompli that stewards would have no choice but to promote Behemoth (All Too Hard-Penny Banger, by Zedrich) to first following the running of the Gr3 Spring Stakes (1200m) at Morphettville in Adelaide. Looking for his second win on the trot after winning the Listed Lightning Stakes in the last Black Type race of the 2020-21 racing season, smart Group-winning sprinter Beau Rossa (Unencumbered) shifted out under pressure, clearly taking the running of Behemoth, who recovered to get within a nose at the line. The reversed result provided a ninth career win and seventh stakes success for the David Jolly-trained Behemoth. The large-framed 6YO son of Vinery Stud's All Too Hard, who has now won $2.6 million in prizemoney, is expected to be a big factor in some of the big Spring sprint races in Sydney and/or or Melbourne. Also the winner of last year's Spring Stakes, Behemoth followed up with victories in the Gr1 Memsie Stakes (1400m) and Gr1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m) – both at Caulfield.
