  • Mossfun's Half-Brother in Kensington Opener

    Wednesday, 4th August 2021

Finishing down the track in the heavy conditions on debut, the connections of the David Payne-trained Semeco (Pierro-Eye For Fun, by Snitzel) will be looking for a better showing when the 3YO encounters a good track on Wednesday in the opening race on the Kenso track at Randwick. Purchased for $390,000 from the draft of Fairview Park Stud at the Inglis Easter Yearling Sale, the half-brother to Gr1 Golden Slipper winner Mossfun (Mossman) and triple Listed winner Aramco (Magic Albert) will have the services of Sam Clipperton and at this stage will jump from barrier 5 in the seven-horse field. Having originally started his career in South Australia with the McEvoy Stable, Semeco was sent to David Payne after two positive early barriers trial performances but is yet to show that positive form after the stable change. With three of the original eight acceptances in the race, Payne has scratched top weight Raging Bull (Bull Point) and will instead saddle up Semeco for Aramco Racing and the last start runner-up Caboteur (So You Think). The race favourite is the Gary Portelli-trained Spitfire (Pierro-Absolutely, by Commands) who finished less than a length back in second place on debut, while the Coolmore and partners-raced Military Men (Air Force Blue-Memories Of You, by Galileo), a half to Group 1 winner Unforgotten (Fastnet Rock) looks to improve on his disappointing debut, and with the services of James McDonald, the Chris Waller-trained gelding could be one to watch.
