  • Memsie Mission for Red Can Man

    Monday, 12th July 2021

If the adage is true that form is temporary but class is permanent, then Red Can Man (Gingerbread Man-Brocky’s Ace, by Surtee) should be allowed to join the latter club. A half-brother to $1 million Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale graduate Quilista (Scandal Keeper) –  sold to Cressfield – the 4YO gelding by Shamardal’s sire-son Gingerbread Man has long been considered serious Group class. Prior to last weekend, Red Can Man had last saluted in a stakes race back in November 2019, but since then he’d placed in both the Gr3 Asian Beau (1400m) and the Gr2 Lee Steere Stakes (1400m), as well as finishing fourth and sixth, respectively, in the Gr1 Railway Stakes (1600m) and Gr1 Winterbottom (1200m) for trainer Steve Wolfe in Perth. Following the decision to send him east to trainer David Brideoake at Mornington, the gelding was beaten just 1.75-lengths by The Astrologist before capturing Saturday’s Gr3 John Monash Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield at just his second run in 7 months. According to thewest.com.au, Brideoake has pencilled in the Gr1 Memsie Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield where the additional 200m should be right up Red Can Man’s alley. Brideoake divulged, “We’ve made a plan and he’ll go to the Bletchingly Stakes in two weeks. Then a couple weeks later it’s the Lawrence and then another two weeks to the Memsie.” He noted, “The Memsie’s not a bad race because you get a lot of cup horses coming back and he’ll be fit.”
