  • Kah Carrying Atlas' Weight of Expectation

    Friday, 9th July 2021

Jamie Kah is a supreme athlete, and the finest current example in a supposedly more enlightened age that putting Ms. before her name in race fields is offensive. That's not because she's a singled-out female rider – they're all in the same boat – or that there's anything wrong with using Ms. but because we don't put Mr. before a male jockey's name. What Kah demonstrably is, is human. She has climbed so close to the summit of a veritable Everest that's yet to be conquered by any Mr. or Ms. But no matter how much she may wish to pretend it's business as usual, it would be unusual for her not to be feeling like the Greek god Atlas – he who carried the weight of the world on his shoulders. On Saturday at Caulfield, Kah has eight rides. Two are just in each-way territory, and the remaining six are all favourites at shorter prices. That she's deep odds-on to ride at least two winners on the program contextualises the concomitant expectation. Following Wednesday's blank day at Sandown, Kah succinctly summed up her thoughts when asked for a comment. "A shit day," was the response. She's a tough marker. Win, lose or draw on Saturday, top three Black Type Premiership jockey Jamie Kah is still a champion who has nothing left to prove.
