  • Cox Plate Now Verry Elleegant's Main Goal

    Tuesday, 25th May 2021

Multiple Group 1 winner Verry Elleegant (Zed) will remain in Australia, for now, reports racingnews.co.nz. Her ownership group had been discussing a possible trip to Europe to contest the Gr1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (2400m), however they have elected to stay home and contest the Gr1 Cox Plate (2040m) instead. “It is highly likely we will remain domestic with her and aim at the Cox Plate, but we are just working through that with Chris (Waller, trainer) at the moment,” part-owner Brae Sokolski told racing.com. “The Arc was certainly high on the agenda but the logistics with COVID made it difficult. It is not beyond her to attempt it in 12 months’ time as a 7YO with COVID hopefully behind us, so we will keep it potentially on the radar.” Now the winner of eight Group 1s (five this season alone), Sokolski opined, “I think she has proven herself as the best horse in the country, without question. It is frightening to think she will only improve as a 6YO mare.” The decision will be music to racing fans’ ears as it creates a likelihood of her clashing with hugely exciting import Zaaki (Leroidesanimeaux) who left Saturday’s vaunted Doomben Cup field floundering 7-lengths in arrears.
