  • Olmedo Chases Second Australian Win

    Thursday, 20th May 2021

Recording his first Australian victory when contesting the Listed Tails Stakes over 1630m at Doomben when carrying 61kgs, the Annabel Neasham-trained Olmedo (Declaration Of War-Super Pie, by Pivotal) will look to make it back to back wins when he lines up in the Gr3 BRC Sprint (1350m) at Doomben this coming Saturday. Once again asked to carry top weight (60.5kg) and ridden again by Ryan Maloney, the 6YO stallion prospect finished a narrow second in a recent barrier trial at Randwick, keeping him ticking over nicely in between runs. Likely to be aimed towards Group 1 races during the carnival, holding nominations to the Kingsford-Smith Cup (May 29) and the Stradbroke Handicap (June 12), victory in either of those will likely see the French Gr1 2000 Guineas winner retired to stand at Aquis in Queensland this season. Having had a few runs under the care of both Kacy Fogden and Chris Waller when he arrived in Australia, nothing went right for Olmedo in those three runs, but in his two starts for Neasham he has finished down the track in the Doncaster before his last start victory. Known in Australia as the sire of Melbourne Cup winner Vow And Declare and Victoria Derby winner Warning, Declaration Of War (War Front) shuttled to Coolmore Australia for two seasons resulting in 82 winners from just 117 runners and over $17m in progeny earnings, highlighting that while he was only here for a short period, his progeny have proven very successful.
