  • High Chaparral the Quiet Achiever

    Tuesday, 18th May 2021

The weekend's triumph by Karaka graduate The Good Fight in New Zealand's Gr3 Rotorua Cup (2200m) prompted a reminder of a quiet storm taking place in Australia. That's the continual immediate influence of The Good Fight's sire High Chaparral, a son of Sadler's Wells whose sireline is hardly known for its precocity. Added to that is that High Chaparral's dam is a daughter of champion stayer Darshaan, and it's befuddling. Boasting four Group 1s at a mile and above, and never out of the first three in all 13 starts High Chaparral's statistics and those of his sons on the Australian 2020-21 Black Type Premiership season are quite eye-opening. While he, himself, is sire of five individual black-type performers (Arctic Stream, Baller, Dollar for Dollar, Never Again and Princess Jenni), High Chaparral is responsible for another 43 black-type performers this season, via his sons Contributor (2), Dundeel (10), Free Eagle (1), Redwood (1), So You Think (19) and Toronado (10). From the aggregate 48 individuals to have either won or placed in Group or Listed races in this Australian season, each of High Chaparral's sons Toronado (Masked Crusader), Dundeel (Truly Great), So You Think (Think It Over) and Contributer (Lion's Roar) has sired a 2020-21 Australian Group 1 winner. Not too many stallions can boast that.
