  • Arrowfield Easter Alumni Shine on Weekend

    Tuesday, 27th April 2021

The weekend provided a pivotal moment for one of Australia’s most commercially-bred thoroughbreds. Groundswell (Fastnet Rock-The Broken Shore, by Hussonet), the $2.3 million top-priced yearling at Inglis Easter 2018 and a full-brother to triple Group 1-winning Champion 3YO Filly Shoals, was far too strong when claiming the Listed SAJC City of Adelaide H. (1400m). The debut stakes-win for Groundswell came after four wins, a Gr1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) third and recognition of his aptitude for on-pace sprinting. Trained by Anthony & Sam Freedman for Ozzie Kheir, John O’Neill, Musk Creek Farm and breeders Jonathan Munz & Arrowfield, he is the fourth stakes-winner among the Stud’s eight million-dollar yearlings at that Sale, after Stronger (Not A Single Doubt), Akari (Snitzel) & Significance (Frankel). Both Shoals and The Broken Shore, a Hussonet half-sister to Redoute’s Choice, are in foal to Written Tycoon. Groundswell’s win was matched by fellow Arrowfield Easter graduate Lord Olympus (Olympic Glory) who produced a big finish from the rear of the field to win the Listed BRC Mick Dittman Plate (1110m). He was one of two weekend stakes-winners, both by Arrowfield Stud sires, for trainer Mark Newnham whose charge Splintex (Snitzel) was a popular winner of the Gr3 Hall Mark Stakes (1200m) at Randwick.
