  • Lightweight McEvoy Gains Aegon Doncaster Ride

    Tuesday, 6th April 2021

With Hugh Bowman unable to make the 52.5kg for Aegon (Sacred Falls-Toss Up, by Zabeel) in Saturday's Gr1 Doncaster (1600m), jockey Kerrin McEvoy has picked up the mount, reports racingnews.co.nz. McEvoy rode Aegon in a trial at Warwick Farm on Friday. "I would have preferred it to be on the grass, but he had a nice hit-out and showed he's freshened up well," McEvoy said. "He is attractively weighted and he obviously doesn't mind a bit of juice in the ground, so if we do get a drop of rain for Doncaster day it should suit him." Aegon won all four of starts in New Zealand including the Gr1 NZ Two Thousand Guineas. He won his first start in Australia, the Gr2 Hobartville Stakes, but found the firm track in the Gr1 Randwick Guineas too much, finishing sixth. Aegon was a $150,000 purchase by co-trainer Andrew Forsman at the 2019 New Zealand Bloodstock National Yearling Sale from the Waikato Stud draft.
