  • Low Key Return for Guineas heroine Odeum

    Friday, 5th March 2021

One of the highlight runners of the Spring, where she went from winning a Moe maiden in August to recording Group 1 success in the Thousand Guineas at Caulfield two months later (see below), the Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr-trained Odeum (Written Tycoon-Movie, by Red Ransom) resumes this weekend in the Listed Furphy Ale March Stakes (1400m) on a campaign which will target Group 1 races in Adelaide over a distance. From barrier 1, jockey Michael Walker will allow the 3YO filly to settle where comfortable in the small seven horse field, but with the remainder of the field made up of battle-hardened geldings, Odeum will not get it her own way. With a solid campaign ahead of her – it would be no surprise to see it turn into a dog fight at the end – Walker wouldn't overexert his mount with bigger plans ahead, including a possible tilt at the Gr1 WS Cox Plate in the spring if she proves she can run out a strong 2000m. Purchased by bloodstock agent Sheamus Mills from the draft of Newhaven Park Stud at the Magic Millions for $420,000, Odeum is one of 11 stakes winners this season for stallion Written Tycoon (Iglesia), with his progeny having sold extremely well this year, breaking the million dollar barrier at both the Magic Millions in January and the recent Inglis Premier Sale.
