  • Canterbury Stakes For Bivouac

    Thursday, 4th March 2021

After a quality piece of work in between races on Tuesday at Gosford stablemate with Kementari (Lonhro), multiple Gr1 winner Bivouac (Exceed And Excel-Dazzler, by More Than Ready) has been given the green light to take his place in Saturday's $500,000 Gr1 Canterbury Stakes (1300m) at Randwick. Somewhat disappointing first up when beaten into fifth by Nature Strip (Nicconi) in the Gr1 Lightning Stakes at Flemington, connections have made the decision to jump the stallion prospect up in trip, a distance he rarely races over, in fact he has had two starts past 1200m, both at 1400m with success in the Gr1 Golden Rose at 3, and then beaten into fifth in the last year's Gr1 All Aged Stakes by Tofane (Ocean Park). Set to be ridden by regular jockey Glen Boss, Bivouac will jump from barrier 8 in the 11-horse field, and with noted leader Samadoubt (Not A Single Doubt) resuming off the back of two barrier trial wins, there is bound to be a good amount of speed in the race which should see Bivouac settle well and give him every chance to come home over the top of them. Stablemate and this season's Gr2 Expressway Stakes winner Savatiano (Street Cry) is currently the second favourite and with seven top two finishes from eight second up runs, the $2.1m earning could make a race of it with her stablemate. Although the quality of the field he defeated first up in the Gr3 Southern Cross Stakes was significantly lower than what he will meet this Saturday, it was the ease in which the Hawkes Racing trained Masked Crusader (Toroando) won, that should see the 4YO run a great race here.
