  • Todman Winners Stand the Test of Time

    Wednesday, 3rd March 2021

A glance through previous winners of the Todman Stakes sees the likes of Farnan (Not A Single Doubt), Yes Yes Yes (Rubick), Vancouver (Medaglia d’Oro), Pierro (Lonhro), Written Tycoon (Iglesia), Charge Forward (Red Ransom) and Exceel And Excel (Danehill), clearly highlighting that colts with above average ability more often than not take the prize. Nominations for this year’s race sit at 13, and with many of those having already put their hands up to highlight their class, Saturday’s race will be an outstanding clash and it would be no surprise to see the eventual Gr1 Golden Slipper winner in the race. The Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr-trained Profiteer (Capitalist-Athena Lass, by Snitzel) could not have been more impressive in his two wins to date and his utter demolition in the $2m Inglis Millennium is likely to see the star colt start favourite. Another unbeaten runner sure to have his supporters is the Richard and Michael Freedman-trained Stay Inside (Extreme Choice-Nothin Leica Storm, by Anabaa), a 4-length winner last time out in the Pierro Plate. With both unbeaten colts by Newgate Farm stallions, it has been no surprise in recent weeks to see the Hunter Valley stud farm purchase controlling interests in the pair, highlighting their possible position on the Newgate Farm stallion roster in years to come. Another unbeaten colt in the field who could possibly have his name plate on a stallion barn door in the future is the Hawkes Racing-trained Remarque (Snitzel-Response, by Charge Forward), himself a brother to Gr1 Golden Slipper winner Estijaab (Snitzel), both out of Group 1 winner Response (Charge Forward). The form lines behind this colt are slightly hard to line up, as although the runner up came out the following start and won at Group 3 level, he since failed behind Home Affair (I Am Invincible-Miss Interiors, by Flying Spur) in the Gr2 Silver Slipper, with that Chris Waller-trained winner, another of Saturday’s leading chances. Godolphin, Coolmore, Arrowfield and Newgate Farm, some of the largest stud farms in the country, will all be represented, looking to add the next future stallion prospect to their respective operations.
