At face value, finding an elite black-type class juvenile prospect at the yearling sales should be relatively simple – head to the proven go-to stallions renowned for precocity, for example Snitzel, I Am Invincible, Written Tycoon, Fastnet Rock, Not A Single Doubt, Zoustar, Exceed and Excel, Redoute’s Choice, Street Boss, Sebring, Spirit of Boom, More Than Ready, Starspangled Banner, Siyouni, Better Than Ready etc. But wait, there’s more: young guns like Brazen Beau, Capitalist, Press Statement, Shalaa, Star Turn, Lord Kanaloa, Frosted, Rich Enuff, Sooboog, Pride of Dubai, Vancouver, Swear, Headwater, Under The Louvre, Flying Artie and Extreme Choice are also putting their hands up. They’re soon to be followed by hot freshman yearling sire prospects that include Churchill, Hellbent, Invader, Pariah, Menari, Merchant Navy, National Defense, Overshare and Russian Revolution. If further convincing is required as to just how challenging it remains to unearth a star juvenile, the proof of the pudding is in the eating. Now into the eighth month of the current racing season, the 2YO Black Type Premiership (BTP) for 2020-21 reveals that of the Top 13-rated 2YOs by points earned from stakes races, only Darley’s Street Boss (Street Cry) is represented more than once – see below. Note: Capitalist’s gun 2YO Profiteering, current Golden Slipper favourite, is absent from the sample as the $2 million Inglis Millennium – the scene of his scorching victory – is currently, like the Magic Millions 2YO Classic, only afforded Restricted Listed status by the Australian Black Type Committee. Click on the image to see the full complement of 2YOs to have earned BTP points – there are 68 of them.
