Beautifully-bred 2YO debutant Mazu (Maurice-Chatelaine, by Flying Spur) won at his first time of asking when taking out the opening event at Canterbury in Sydney on Friday evening. Becoming the second local winner for his all-conquering Japanese-bred multiple Group 1-winning Arrowfield shuttler Maurice (Screen Hero-Mejiro Frances, by Carnegie), Mazu was allowed to jump at an attractive $10 in a field that included odds-on favourite Forbes (Capitalist). Mazu is a half-brother to Gr1 Coolmore Stud Stakes heroine Headway (Charge Forward) who also finished runner-up in the Gr1 Golden Slipper. Defeating fellow Maurice colt Conrad (ex No Comment, by Danzero), Mazu is trained by Peter and Paul Snowden for an ownership group headed by Triple Crown Syndications, and was ridden by Tommy Berry. Mazu was a $180,000 purchase at the 2020 Inglis Classic Sale where he was consigned by Parsons Creek Pastoral Co.
