  • Tavistock Filly Potentially a Star Stayer

    Tuesday, 23rd February 2021

Among several high-profile stallions lost to the industry in the past few years was Cambridge Stud's Tavistock. The late son of Montjeu (Sadler's Wells) has proven himself to be a prolific sire who boasts progeny career earnings of almost $50 million, including 6 individual Group 1 winners – the latest of which was last Spring's Gr1 Victoria Derby hero Johnny Get Angry. Among a number of his stock to find their way to Australia is last weekend's back-to-back stakes winner Tralee Rose (ex Star of Tralee, by Zabeel). A $50,000 purchase at the New Zealand Bloodstock National Yearling Sale Series in 2018, the Karaka graduate demolished a field by 7-lengths in the Listed Bagot Handicap (2800m) last month and did a similar hatchet job on her opposition on Saturday in the Gr3 Lord Reims Stakes (2400m) at Morphettville. "She pulled herself into the race. She's a jockey's dream," said jockey Jason Holder of Tralee Rose who is line-bred to Sadler's Wells. "She felt like she could stay all day, and she was nice and strong all the way to the line. Moving forward, I think she's got a lot there. "She looks like a natural type for the Adelaide Cup (3200m, March 8). With a bit of luck, she'd be very hard to beat in that race." Tralee Rose is trained by Symon Wilde, who purchased her from Cambridge Stud's draft in Book 1 of Karaka 2018 on behalf of a large ownership group which also includes him.
