Roy Spoiling For a Barney at The Valley

Tuesday, 28th July 2020

Godolphin’s Barney Roy, who was retired to stud in 2018 but subsequently gelded after fertility issues and returned to training, has claimed a third elite success over the weekend with victory in Germany’s Gr1 Grosser Dallmayr-Preis (2000m). Sent off the $2.00 favourite, likely WS Cox Plate runner Barney Roy was never comfortable on the rain-affected track but his class and courage was enough for jockey William Buick to get him home. That could be great news for Australian racing fans as the son of Excellabration is a strong chance to make the trip to Melbourne for October’s Gr1 Cox Plate. Put into training with Charlie Appleby since being gelded, the latest iteration of Barney Roy has won four times – all at stakes level – from seven starts, including races in France, Germany and the UAE (see below). Benbatl also won the Grosser Dallmayr-Preis before finishing a threatening second behind Winx in Moonee Valley’s showpiece weight-for-age feature. After his latest success, Appleby confirmed, "Going forward, we are probably going to have a look at campaigning him in Australia now.”
