Battaash on The Verge of Goodwood History
Explosively fast English sprinter Battaash (Dark Angel-Anna Law, by Lawman) will attempt an unprecedented fourth Gr2 King George Stakes (5 furlongs) on Tuesday. A winner of France's Gr1 Prix de l'Abbeye de Longchamp as a 3YO, Gr1 Nunthorpe Stakes as a 5YO and, more recently, the Gr1 King's Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot, the Charlie Hills-trained 5 furlong specialist won Goodwood's Gr2 King George Stakes in 2017, 2018 and 2019. Having broken the lightning quick Dayjur's 5 furlong track record at York, a fourth consecutive victory in the prestigious Goodwood sprint for owner Sheikh Hamdan al Maktoum will raise the bar markedly for future generations to try to emulate. Hills believes the track suits the son of Dark Angel, telling racingtv.com ahead of next week's challenge, "Battaash came out of the King's Stand really well. He has been fresh since then and he goes into Goodwood in similar form to last year. He had his first swinging-canter back this morning and we were delighted with him. I couldn't be happier with him at this stage." Below is last year's hattrick win for Bataash, chased home in sizzling fashion by Australia's Houtzen.
