Internationals Still Expected for Spring Carnivals
Greg Carpenter, Racing Victoria’s respected executive general manager of racing, has claimed on racing.com’s show After The Last, that pretty much no matter what happens, international competitors will be a part of the 2020 Victorian Spring Racing Carnival. In what some industry pundits will see as somewhat surprising and optimistic, Carpenter said, “We already know that horses can travel… horses that are running in Europe will be able to come to Australia particularly if they are Australia-owned horses, and then transfer after their two weeks of quarantine at the Werribee International Horse Centre and join the stables of local trainers.” Whilst pointing out that Australia’s peak racing body, Racing Australia, is discussing the matter with the federal government on behalf of both Victoria and New South Wales (which hosts The Everest and Golden Eagle), Carpenter acknowledged, “We are still not certain whether that will be able to be accommodated, but what is certain is there will be high quality international horses coming to Melbourne to compete in the carnival again this year.” Gr1 WS Cox Plate entries close on 4 August.
