Waller Hungry for Flight Sequel
Trainer Chris Waller knows a thing or two about turning quality 2YOs into leading 3YOs. Just over a week out from juveniles becoming sophomores, the Sydney-based trainer is planning his onslaught on October’s Gr1 Flight Stakes (1600m), one of the four legs of the Darley-sponsored Princess series for 3YO fillies. Waller trained last year’s winner Funstar, and is bullish about this year’s early favourite Hungry Heart. The Yulong-bred daughter of world class stallion Frankel captured the Gr2 Sweet Embrace Stakes (1200m) at Randwick in the autumn before a meritorious fifth behind Farnan in the Gr1 Golden Slipper. Subsequently spelled, racenet.com.au reports Waller’s intention to target the only spring Gr1 for 3YO fillies with her. Waller observed, "Obviously after the run in the Slipper we could have easily been tempted running in the Sires and Champagne which would have been distances that you'd expect her to suit. The Yulong team are very good to train for and they are going to be rewarded with their patience with a filly like her.” Having furnished strongly during her break, Hungry Heart is back in work at Rosehill with an early September race return in the Furious Stakes expected.
