Queensland's Coral Coast Shield Launched

Wednesday, 22nd July 2020

A five week action-packed racing program in Central and North Queensland has been launched and will be named the Coral Coast Shield, reports racingqueensland.com.au. In total, twelve heats will be staged in Rockhampton, Mackay, Townsville and Cairns during October and November, culminating in the final on Saturday 28 November at the Townsville Turf Club. Almost $500,000 in prize money up for grabs across the series and the winning city will secure $25,000 to go towards improving their patron or racing facilities, while each club will also boast a nominated charity partner which will share in a further $25,000. "The Coral Coast Shield is a fantastic addition to our racing calendar," Racing Minister Mr Hinchliffe said. "It will bring a different dimension to racing with this new and exciting format. In years gone by, we have seen the way in which the North Queensland Games has been fiercely contested and we look forward to the Coral Coast Shield stoking the same fires of competition amongst four proud cities." The dates are:

  • 17 October – Rockhampton Jockey Club with three feature races including the Beef City Cup
  • 1 November – Cairns to host the Cape York Cup
  • 14 November – Mackay will host the Cane Country Cup
  • 20 November – Townsville's Castle Hill Cup
  • 28 November – Finals day at Townsville with the Coral Coast Cup, Coral Coast Lightning, and Queen of the Coast.
