Ricky Yiu Crowned Hong Kong Champion Trainer

Friday, 17th July 2020

In Hong Kong news, Ricky Yiu has won his first Hong Kong Champion Trainer title, reports scmp.com. The Hong Kong season concluded at Happy Valley on Wednesday night, and although Yiu didn’t win on the night, he finished the season with 67 winners, two ahead of Tony Cruz, with third going to Francis Lui with 63 winners. “Obviously the championship is the biggest achievement of my career,” said Yiu. “It wasn’t expected [at the start of the season], I knew my horses would do really well but it wasn’t until three months ago that I thought I had a chance of winning. This was a once-in-a-lifetime chance so I just put my head down and kept working and kept focusing.” The COVID restrictions at the course resulted in a lack of celebrations. [The atmosphere] is very strange – there’s no presentation – it’s totally different.” Yiu said. “There’s not much excitement.”
