Blueblood Strawb Set For City Class Debut

Friday, 17th July 2020

Strawb (Fastnet Rock-Joy Toy, by Encosta de Lago) will make her city debut on Saturday in the ATC Ranvet Handicap over 1400m, but it hasn't been a simple pathway, reports racingnsw.com.au. Bred by John Singleton, Strawb had six trials prior to her racetrack debut in February 2019 where she ran last. She was sold to Matthew Sandblom for $80,000, changed trainers, and won a Coffs Harbour maiden race over 1000m. Sent to stud, Strawb failed to get into foal to both Capitalist (Written Tycoon-Kitalpha, by Fusaichi Pegasus) and Deep Field (Northern Meteor-Listen Here, by Elusive Quality) and was sent to her third trainer, Nathan Doyle. Since then, she has won three of her four starts for him, and if it wasn't for her issues with the gates, Doyle believes she'd be unbeaten for him. 'She does it with ease, she pricks the ears on the line, she goes home and licks the bin. I've got some nice enough horses in the stable but she is just next level,' said Doyle. 'She's very clean winded, she's hassle free, she's sound and believe it or not with her gate issues she's perfect to deal with at home. She's a big mare and she just doesn't like to be crowded in the gates. On every occasion when she missed the start they were holding on to her in the gates and she hates that, she just wants to be left alone. Hopefully we have found the key to her and she can move forward and be better for it.' Strawb's dam, Joy Toy, is a winning half-sister to Gr1 winner More Joyous (More Than Ready) with both of them out of Gr1 winner Sunday Joy (Sunday Silence).
