Hong Kong Champion Awards Under COVID Threat

Tuesday, 14th July 2020

The Hong Kong Champion Awards ceremony planned for Thursday is in serious doubt as Hong Kong faces another wave of the COVID19 pandemic, reports scmp.com. 'We need to have a look at the legal interpretation to see if we can hold this event or not,' Jockey Club chief executive Winfried Engelbrecht-Bresges. 'If it's off, we then have to see what we can do instead. We also have to look at what we can do with our [off-course betting branches] and the Mark Six.' Around HK$100m was put into HKJC betting accounts on Saturday, and the off-course betting branches are open until Tuesday, but that remains under review. 'People have won money so we have to see how we can get it back to them,' Engelbrecht-Bresges said. Turnover on Sunday's meeting hit HK$1.92 billion for the day with HK$251.7 million alone invested on the last race ' the highest of the season. In other good news, Apolar Warrior (Deep Field-Charlety Star, by Arena), who got loose in race seven and smashed through the running rail and the fencing near the public entrance, is fine. He was having his third start in Hong Kong.
