Sircconi Explosive at Wintry Flemington
Among a plethora of exciting performances on Winter Championships Final Day at Flemington, few stood out like underrated sprinter Sircconi. By Nature Strip's sire Nicconi, Sircconi's catch-me-if-you-can win provided his trainer Nick Ryan with his first stakes winner in manner he'll never forget. It wasn't the first stakes win for Sircconi, however, who won the Gr2 VRC Sires Produce Stakes as a 2YO for then trainer Peter Morgan. Ridden by Daniel Stackhouse, Victoria's overall leading rider for the season, on Saturday Sircconi had to be used up a little early in proceedings to get across from a wide barrier. Able to box seat and find cover soon thereafter, Stackhouse slipped him more rein once into the straight and the 5YO gelding – on a quick back-up after finishing runner-up at Caulfield the weekend before – found another gear to win by a comfortable 4-lengths. An excited Ryan, a former champion apprentice jockey, said after the race, "I thought he was a top-three hope. I was very confident I [had] brought him here today in really good order. For him to come out and do that, it's just great to see…"
