Enable Goes Down in Coral-Eclipse
Punters can’t say they weren’t warned. Trainer John Gosden more than hinted at the fact that champion racemare Enable, in pursuit of an historic third Gr1 Arc later this year, was a touch under-done for the Gr1 Coral-Eclipse Stakes at Sandown – code for: “She’ll probably need the run.” Allowed, sensibly, by Frankie Dettori to let the star daughter of Nathaniel find her feet while Ballydoyle’s Japan (Galileo) tried to take the fight to leader Ghaiyyath (Dubawi), the 4-length margin on a leader-biased track was always likely to prove a bridge too far. Dettori sensibly, again, realised going into the final 100m that, although he might reduce the margin to a length or so, winning was impossible and it was best to let Enable run second without over-taxing her. The result was a 2.5-length defeat that lost her no admirers but might have earned him the wrath of stewards had Enable been pipped by Japan for runner-up. Enable will be back, however her quest for Arc history might be prove equally as difficult in 2020 as it was in 2019.
