Million Dollar US 2YO Sale Falls Through

Tuesday, 30th June 2020

A US seven figure purchase at June’s Ocala Breeders' Sales Spring Sale of 2YOs in Training has been voided after the buyer discovered his new prize is a cribber. The vice, which can wear away a horse’s teeth, cause over-development of neck muscles and potentially lead to osteoarthritis of the hyoid (a small bone in the throat), has to be declared by vendors ahead of any thoroughbred sale. According to bloodhorse.com, Larry Bests’s OXO Equine outlaid US$1.1 million for 2YO Fortunate Son, a 2YO by Speighster, when bidding by phone. After being advised by Taylor Made Farm that his purchase was a cribber, the buyer returned the juvenile under the conditions of sale that allow a seven day window for cancellation where a condition has not been noted prior to sale. After video evidence of the cribbing activity was sent by Taylor Made to the sales company, Best vented, "Everybody knows that when a horse is a cribber, it has to be announced. As an owner or a trainer how did they not know that horse was not a cribber. It's clearly a cribber." Previous owner, Solano Beach Sales, has sent Fortunate Son to be trained by Bob Baffert.
