Patience Rewarded for Payne

Thursday, 25th June 2020

Dual licence holder Michelle Payne is enjoying her most fruitful period as a trainer with nine winners from 29 runners in the past three months, reports racing.com. "Of the nine winners we've had recently, five of them have come from two horses we've got that are five-year-olds that are just starting to mature and hit their straps," Payne said. "They were actually two of the first horses we bought and it's just taken a bit of time for things to come together and for them to mature. It's a good example to show people that if you are patient and give them the time they need, what can happen." As far as her riding career goes, Payne hasn't been riding much lately, but recently won on Jukila (Lucas Cranach-Armure Royale, by Woodman) and Victory Approach (Dawn Approach-Venetian Lady, by Woodman). "I had to take a bit of a step back from riding because I was struggling to keep up with it all," she said. "I was trying to train the horses, manage our staff and then train myself for riding and it was just too much, so something had to give. It was a good time to sit back and hand the reins over to the jockeys and get a feel for what things might be like in the future because I'm not going to ride forever. I was playing it by ear a little bit, but my body is feeling good and I'm feeling like I'm riding well so I'll keep doing it for a little while longer."
