Breeders Spoiled for Choice in 2020
At a time where being a jack of all trades and a master of none is eschewed in favour of specialising in one particular facet of something, the thoroughbred industry continues to evolve in lock-step with that philosophy. In the modern era, many – although by no means all – stud farms have come to focus primarily on their stallions which has led to the continued growth of the specialist agistment and spelling sector. Providing trainers with dedicated spelling facilities where racehorses can rest and recuperate with structured diets, these properties typically also offer breeders the opportunity to have their mares permanently boarded, walked on and off to stallions, and closely monitored before and after foaling. The resultant foals are weaned and reared, and more often than not, prepared for sale as either weanlings or yearlings, or grown out for connections who choose to race their young stock.
